Security agencies have launched sweeping operations across several areas in Kampala Metropolitan targeting criminal gangs hiding in betting centres, unfinished buildings and suspected crime hideouts.
The operations conducted in different policing divisions led to the arrest of more than 100 suspects linked to various crimes including theft, burglary, vandalism and suspected arson plots.
According to Kampala Metropolitan Police Deputy Spokesperson Luke Owoyesigyire, the operations were intelligence-led and aimed at dismantling criminal networks operating in the city.
In Mulimira and Kyebando under the Kira Road policing area, a team led by the Divisional Police Commander arrested 31 suspects during a crackdown on criminal hideouts.
The suspects are currently detained at Kira Road Police Division where they are undergoing screening and fingerprinting.
In Ntinda, a police patrol intercepted suspected criminals in Kigowa who fled on seeing security officers. The suspects abandoned dangerous weapons including pangas, hammers, iron bars, sticks and jerrycans containing suspected fuel.
Police later tracked down and arrested two suspects who had hidden inside a residential garage.
Investigators believe the group may have been planning arson attacks linked to a land dispute.
In Kanaala Zone, Nateete, police arrested another suspect found in possession of four suspected stolen motorcycles and several number plates.
In Entebbe areas of Bunono and Guda, a separate operation led to the arrest of 31 suspects linked to theft, burglary and vandalism. The suspects have already been charged and are awaiting court action.
Meanwhile, in Kasangati Division, police operations in Wampewo Ward, Gayaza and Kijabijjo resulted in the arrest of over 47 suspects from betting centres and suspected criminal hideouts.
Police also arrested two suspects in Kijabijjo who were operating an illegal garage where stolen motorcycles were allegedly dismantled.
Several motorcycle parts, number plates and vandalised components were recovered from the premises.
Owoyesigyire warned that criminals are increasingly using betting centres, unfinished buildings and makeshift structures as hiding places.
Police say the ongoing operations will continue across Kampala Metropolitan to eliminate criminal networks and improve public safety.
