After years of delays, Hon. Victoria Rusoke, Minister of State for Local Government, has confirmed that elections for Local Councils 1 and 2 and Women Councils will be held by the end of April 2026
. The announcement came during a parliamentary sitting on Thursday, 12 March 2026, presided over by Speaker Anita Among.
The elections, whose previous term expired in 2023, have been postponed six times, raising concerns about governance at the grassroots level. MP Keefa Kiwanuka expressed frustration over conflicting information from authorities regarding funding, noting that while the Electoral Commission said money had been released, the Ministry of Local Government reported a Shs58 billion shortfall. Cabinet had indicated elections would happen in March and April.
Speaker Among warned that absence of elected local leaders has deprived communities of democratic representation, emphasizing the urgency of releasing funds to facilitate the elections. Uganda’s more than 70,000 villages, governed by LCs 1 and 2, await the historic return of locally elected leadership.
