Responsibilities
Develop and implement systems aligned with ISO 14001 (Environmental Management), ISO 45001 (Occupational Health and Safety), and FSSC 22000 (Food Safety Management) standards.
Ensure these systems are embedded in project activities to drive continual improvement, pollution prevention, and zero-harm culture.
Lead climate risk assessments in accordance with IFC Performance Standard 1 and Task Force on Climate Related Financial Disclosures (TCFD) principles
Maintain an updated GHG emissions inventory using GHG Protocol methodology.
Implement resource-efficiency programs on water, energy, and waste reduction to minimize environmental footprint and enhance operational resilience.
Plan and execute periodic internal and external audits, site inspections, and incident reporting and root cause analysis.
Develop and monitor Corrective and Preventive Action (CAPA) plans to close non- conformities; and generate performance trend analyses aimed at achieving zero incidents, zero illnesses, and zero harm to people, assets, and the environment.
Enforce HSE and Food Safety compliance among all contractors, suppliers, and service providers, ensuring that prequalification, onboarding, and supervision processes integrate ESG, OHS, labour, and environmental criteria. Monitor and report performance through site inspections and compliance scorecards.
Develop and continuously update a compliance register covering environmental, occupational health ,safety, and food safety legislation and permits. Ensure timely renewal of all statutory approvals, including workplace registrations (DOSH/OSHA), NEMA/OSHA permits, effluent discharge licences, and fire certificates.
Coordinate and prepare the organisation for third-party certification audits (ISO 14001, 45001, 50001, FSSC 22000, HACCP, BRCGS, ETC). Maintain implementation evidence, address auditor findings, and track continual improvement actions across all operational sites.
Serve as the primary contact for regulatory agencies (NEMA, OSHA, DOSH, REMA, NEMC, local regulations etc), ensuring compliance submissions, inspection facilitation, and closure of statutory observations are managed efficiently.
Design and operationalize grievance redress mechanisms (GRM), stakeholder engagement plans, and community outreach initiatives, ensuring accessibility, transparency, and alignment with IFC Performance Standard 1 and 2 requirements.
Ensure all site operations adhere to human rights principles, fair labour practices, and gender equality standards, including prevention of discrimination, harassment, and gender-based violence (GBV).
Monitor labour conditions, local hiring, and worker welfare in compliance with local Employment Acts and IFC PS2.
Collect, verify and analyse data across environmental social, and governance indicators.
Maintain ESG performance reports and prepare monthly and quarterly reports, board presentations, and investor disclosures consistent with GRI Standards and IFRS S2 (Sustainability Disclosure Standards).
Establish robust document control systems for all audits, inspections, training, and compliance documentation.
Ensure audit trails, evidence logs, and management review records are up to date and easily retrievable.
Develop and deliver ESG, EHS, and Food Safety induction and refresher training programs for staff, contractors, and suppliers. Evaluate learning outcomes, identify gaps, and implement targeted upskilling initiatives to enhance overall site competence.
Champion awareness campaigns, lead in safety leadership walks, champion recognition programs, and employee participation in HSE and food safety committees.
Qualifications and Experience
Minimum 5 years’ experience in a relevant role.
Bachelor’s degree from a recognized university in Food Technology, Occupational Health and Safety, Environmental Science, or a related field Ideally have an OHS qualification such as NEBOSH or equivalent.
Knowledge in environmental management system development and implementation including international standards such as ISO 14001 and ISO 50001.
Knowledge in health and safety management system development and implementation including international standards such as OHAS 18001 and ISO 45001.
Knowledge in food safety management system development and implementation including international standards such as FSSC 22000 and HACCP.
Knowledge in inhuman rights, stakeholder engagement, community issues, and other social aspects.
Have experience working with third parties such as contractors and consultants.
Ideally have working knowledge of international ECS standards, such as IFC Performance Standards.
Must have the right to work and live in the local country.
