Internet access has largely been restored across Uganda following the conclusion of the 2026 general elections, but social media platforms remain shut down as the government cites ongoing security concerns in the post-election period.

In a statement issued on Sunday, the Uganda Communications Commission (UCC) confirmed that access to general web services resumed on January 18 after a review by the Inter-Agency Security Committee.
As a result, Ugandans can once again access essential digital services, including websites, emails, online banking, government portals, and other critical online platforms.
However, UCC Executive Director Nyombi Thembo clarified that social media and messaging applications will remain restricted for now. He explained that these platforms present a higher risk of being used to spread misinformation, incite unrest, or undermine public order, particularly in the sensitive period following national elections.
According to Thembo, the continued restriction is a preventive measure aimed at maintaining stability as security agencies continue to assess the situation on the ground. He noted that past experiences have shown how quickly social media can be exploited to circulate false information and inflammatory content after elections.
During the voting period, the government had ordered a complete internet shutdown, a move it said was intended to curb election-related misinformation and potential electoral fraud. Defending the decision, Thembo said it was a carefully considered step taken in the interest of ensuring a peaceful electoral process.
“This was not a decision taken lightly,” Thembo said, emphasizing that national security and public calm were the government’s top priorities.
With general internet access now restored, the UCC has urged citizens to use online services responsibly, especially for business, education, and access to public information. Thembo also warned that security agencies remain on high alert and will take action against anyone who attempts to use digital platforms to disrupt peace and stability.
