Ahead of Sir David Attenborough’s 99th birthday, Prince William has paid an emotional tribute to the legendary naturalist, calling him a “true giant” and revealing how deeply Sir David has influenced both him and his children.

Writing in The Mail on Sunday, the Prince of Wales shared personal reflections on the environmentalist’s legacy and the profound impact he has had on young minds—particularly those of Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and Prince Louis.

A Legacy That Shapes the Next Generation

“Sir David has inspired my children and me in so many ways,” William, 41, wrote. He recalled a moment when Prince George, then just a few years old, became visibly distressed while watching a programme about extinction.

“He turned to me and said, ‘I don’t want to watch any more—why has it come to this?’” the prince shared. The question stayed with William and became a turning point in his own commitment to environmental action.

That same year, the royal children got the rare chance to ask Sir David their own questions in a video clip shared by the Palace. The young royals quizzed him about nature, animals, and his personal favourites—an encounter that reflected both their admiration and growing awareness of environmental issues.

A Partner in Earthshot and Planetary Protection

Sir David has been a prominent supporter of Prince William’s Earthshot Prize, the global environmental award launched in 2020 to find and fund innovative solutions to the planet’s most pressing challenges.

The £1 million prize is awarded annually to five winners across five categories, and Sir David has been a guiding presence since its inception.

“We celebrate not just a milestone of years, but a lifetime of extraordinary service to our planet,” William wrote of the naturalist’s upcoming birthday. “Through his boundless curiosity, gentle wisdom, and unwavering commitment, he has brought the wonders of Earth into our homes and into our hearts.”

A Voice for Nature, A Voice for Urgency

Sir David’s voice—instantly recognisable to generations of viewers—has become synonymous with the natural world. Prince William praised the broadcaster’s role as a moral compass in the climate conversation: “His voice has become a guiding light in our understanding of nature, and his message—that we must cherish and protect our planet—has never been more vital.”

Closing his tribute, William offered a heartfelt toast: “May we all raise a glass to a true giant—and continue the mission he has led.”
