French President Emmanuel Macron has addressed a viral video showing a lighthearted moment between him and his wife, First Lady Brigitte Macron, after their arrival in Hanoi, Vietnam, for an official visit.
The footage, captured shortly after the couple disembarked from their aircraft late Sunday, shows President Macron appearing in the doorway of the plane.
A hand, belonging to someone in red—believed to be Brigitte Macron—briefly pushes his face from the side. Macron, momentarily caught off guard, quickly regains his composure and waves to the waiting press.
Speculation about the clip quickly spread online, prompting various interpretations of the interaction. Speaking to reporters in Hanoi on Monday, President Macron downplayed the incident and the public reaction it triggered.
“There’s a video showing me joking and teasing my wife, and suddenly it becomes a geo-planetary event, with people inventing theories to explain it,” he said with amusement.
Macron confirmed the footage was authentic but expressed frustration with how it had been sensationalized. “Yes, the video is real. And while some videos may be altered, this one wasn’t. Still, people are attaching all sorts of nonsense to it.”
The French president and first lady are in Vietnam for a diplomatic visit focused on strengthening bilateral ties and trade relations.
