A Colorado mother who courageously battled cancer four times was tragically killed when a stray bullet tore into her home—fired by a stranger who claimed he was just cleaning his gun.

Jennifer James, 49, was fatally shot on April 28 in Berthoud, north of Denver, after 20-year-old Ebenezer Worku allegedly opened fire from his car parked outside her house, according to police.

Worku told authorities he accidentally discharged his Glock 22 while trying to clear the chamber, local outlet KDVR reported, citing a police affidavit. One of the bullets pierced a window and struck James in the arm and chest.

Despite her injuries, the mother of four managed to call 911 before collapsing. She was pronounced dead at the scene after first responders’ efforts to save her failed.

Two of James’ children were at home during the shooting, police said.

“It just makes me mad that such a senseless act of violence occurred,” said Ashley James, her eldest daughter. “You never think it’s going to happen to you.”

Ashley described her mother as deeply devoted to her family. “She was the most selfless mum anyone could ask for,” she said. “She gave everything to us. I’ll be forever grateful.”

Authorities were able to identify and arrest Worku using surveillance footage and license plate reader data. He has been charged with first-degree murder and is currently being held at the Larimer County Jail on a $1.25 million cash-only bond.
